Most people think that “feeling bad” is an indication that you are sick. This basic, yet faulty, premise is what starts sooooo many off on the WRONG road to health and wellness. You see, from the moment we are born, our loving parents generally will do anything to make us feel better in the moment, no matter if the cause is a dropped pacifier or a fever. Now, I will not spend this entire article explaining how fevers are good for you because if you are a member of our practice and don’t know this yet, then sign up for the after school, remedial session every other Thursday at 645pm!

That being said, I do want to spend a little time examining the following question: “What symptom is bad for you?” I generally ask this question at some point in all of our lectures, and I get great dialogue and creative answers. You see, while headaches, fever, insomnia, depression, muscle aches, anxiety, and other symptoms may all “FEEL” bad, they are ALL very SMART alarms and/ or actions the body is innately making as part of a healing process. Some of you may say, but how is depression good for you? Well, I would counter, if I found out today a close family member died suddenly, and I felt no despair or depression but instead happiness, then THAT would be bad. I didn’t say I like depression or sadness, but there are moments in one’s life, where that is the healthy response for the body. This is the same with a runny nose and fever. Sure, it feels bad, but it is a process the body must go through to achieve wellness.

For too often, we are our own worst enemy, because many of the teachings of our parents, and of western medicine, has taught us that SYMPTOMS are bad, and we should mask them as soon as possible with a chemical to FEEL better. We see this in kids too! Before trying natural processes like chiropractic care, parents are accepting diagnosis like asthma and ADHD as inherent problems with their kids , and are resigned to the fact that their child must be on side effect ridden medications for life! As babies, we overmedicate young immune systems with more vaccines than any other country in the world, and give a million rounds of antibiotics for ear infections. All the while, the body was simply doing what it was designed or evolved to do.

Anyone who exercises will tell you there is a “passage of pain.” At some point during the exercise in order to grow, to improve, to get better, our bodies hit a point where we become very uncomfortable, to the point where you don’t know if you can go on. It is at and beyond that point where our greatest growth takes place. The body is going through the exact same thing when we have symptoms. It doesn’t mean you are sick, it means your body is healing and getting stronger. But, unfortunately, the majority of us don’t look these symptoms as a good thing. We are trained from the time we are kids to avoid discomfort, to avoid symptoms. So as adults, when we can’t handle life’s stresses, so we pump up with Paxil or Ambien to sleep, or Vicodin for pain, or Xanax for anxiety, or any of the other common presciptions out there. And then we wonder why the average adult takes 8 prescription meds by the age of 55 (yes, true statistic), and that our health care system is causing us to go broke.

Ok, now let me make myself clear one more time. I ALSO do not like to GET symptoms, but I appreciate their purpose and like to listen and respond naturally to their meaning. This is why I love getting regular adjustments for my family and I, so we have a clear communication pathway to our cells, tissues, and organs through our healthy nervous system. This provides for a stronger adaptation to the stressors of life and when we do have symptoms our response is always faster than those bodies who don’t have a fine tuning, allowing us to have a better, more appropriate response to life’s stresses – whether that is a virus, an accident, etc. (And I know that many of you get this as well because every single days we hear stories of children and adults getting sick, or having pain, and their bodies fighting it off much much easier than in the past before they started getting adjusted. It’s why we come to work each day! So keep those stories coming!)

Much respect

Dr. M

Imagine not being able to run, or play, or living in fear of being unable to take a deep breath. Imagine being literally tied to medication, medication that may cause you to develop cataracts, or to not be able to fight off simple illnesses, or develop osteoporosis. Medicine that damages your lungs every time that you use it, that may send you into analphylatic shock, that may even trigger an even worse attack than the one that you are using it to “treat”. Imagine thinking that you have no choice but resign yourself to this life. This is reality for over 34 million American, 1/3 of whom are children, who have been diagnosed with asthma.

It is so prevalent that it has worked its way into all aspects of our culture.

Asthma (or the diagnosis of asthma) is an exploding epidemic in this country and in the developed world. Since 1980 asthma rates in the U.S. have almost quadrupled. There are a number of reasons for this: vaccine recommendations per child in the US has tripled in the same time frame (vaccines change the way our immune system works, leading to sensitization of and inflammation in airways), lack of exposure to bacteria due to antibiotics and antibacterial soaps, pollution, the increase of pro-infammatory foods such as grains, sugars, and milk in our diets, the increasing lack of activity and exercise in our lifestyles, and poor posture related to the increase in TV, video game, computers, and other sitting activites in both children and adults. (A comparison between asthma rates in the US (very high) and under-developed countries (very low) demonstrate these reasons nicely. Underdeveloped countries (and even developed countries such as those in Europe and Japan) don’t mandate nearly as many vaccines as the US, live a much more active lifestyle, don’t each nearly as many processed foods, and are typically exposed to bacteria and dirt in much more natural ways.)

There are good news though. Both research and our clinical experience have demonstrated that it is possible to help people with asthma throw away their inhalers and take back their lives naturally. Its for this reason that we have decided to declare March Asthma Awareness Month here in our office. We have set a goal of helping at least 25 people overcome their asthma and start living their lives again, start running, and playing, and stop living in fear.

We need your help! Each and everyone of us knows someone with asthma who could benefit from our help. Simply give them our information, or even better yet, make them an appointment with Sarah or Monica. There are no prizes, gifts, or giveways for doing so. Just the joy in knowing that you have helped someone change their life!

As some of you may have noticed (at least I hope you noticed), I was out of the office last week Wednesday through Friday. I wish I could say that I was at an exciting chiropractic conference or sitting on a beach somewhere, but, alas, I was at home, in bed, sick. My symptoms included: fever, congestion and runny nose, headache, dizziness, and low energy. I’m still left with a lingering cough. My question to you is: were my symptoms a good or bad thing?

The answer depends on your view of what health is. If your view of health involves feeling good then obviously they were a bad thing. I felt like crap! But if you view health, as I do, as the optimum functioning of the body, then my symptoms were a very good thing. They were signs that my body was doing what it needed to to fight off infection. Lets take a look at each symptom and what positive effect they had on my body:

fever – raising the body’s temperature in order to kill whatever organism was invading my body

congestion and runny nose – the by products of the white blood cells attacking the improper organism as well as my body trapping them in the mucous membranes so as not to let them infect deeper

headache, dizziness, and low energy – my body’s way of making me stay and bed, rest, and allow it to do its thing.

My lingering cough – breaking up and expelling the products left over in my lungs from the body fighting the infection

Look, it sucks to get sick. Believe me I would have much rather been in the office working, not lying in bed. But over the long haul I am better off going through what I just went through – I know that my body can fight something off in a relatively short amount of time, the next time I’m exposed to it I have developed natural immunity to it, and I’m back in the office today rested and relaxed. Getting sick was a good thing!!!

Another good thing is Dr. M’s Birthday Bash this Friday at Mrs. Murphy’s Irish Bistro! Everyone who has RSVP’d thank you, if they haven’t already, you will be receiving a call from Monica or Sarah confirming you and your guests. We still have a few seats left for anyone else who wants to attend. Please call us today with your name and your number of guests so we can seat you. It’s gonna be a great time!!!

I thought I would start off the year with a short message on immunity, especially since many of you may have a poor immune system at the moment due to all of your holiday stress. A professor of mine, Dr. Fred Barge, used a memorable story to help us change the way most people mistakenly view germs and immune function. Some of you may have heard it before if you’ve heard me speak.

I want you to imagine that I took all of the garbage cans out of our Chicago alleys and put them on the street like NYC does. Do you think that our scavengers (squirrels and rats) will stay in the alley, or do you think they will come out to the street, since I moved the garbage there? Since we are talking about garbage by the way, do you think squirrels and rats are good for our environment or bad? Do they help with the decomposition of our waste or make it worse? I’m sure you answered that they would come to the street to where the garbage has been moved, and I’m sure you said they are good for the environment.

Now, you see, germs are really just smaller versions of opportunistic life, like rodents. They will survive in high quantity where there is a form of garbage that they like to live in or near, and, like rats, they are actually good for our planet. Mind you, I didn’t say you had to say they were cute!

Most people are running around scared of germs and viruses as if they are actually out to get you. Calm your ego down, because none of you are that popular to these organisms, unless your body is a hospitable host due to its current state of garbage. Nobody if perfect, but some of us have a lot more garbage in our internal system than our neighbors, and those are the individuals whom are more likely to be “infected” with illness, due to their poor immune system, not because you are popular or look cool with your new Banana Republic underwear you got from your mom at Christmas. This is why only 2 kids generally get sick in a classroom of 30 kids. If it were the germ that caused it, then all would be sick, because kids touch and get into everything, as any parent would know.

So, for 2011, is the New Year going to bring a New You? What are you willing to do different, or stop doing, in order to clean up your internal garbage to keep the rats/germs away? If you are reading this, then at least you already get regular chiropractic care which improves immune system function instantly. On the other hand, maybe you need to schedule more fun into your weekly calendar, eat less sugar, eat more greens, stretch, relax, meditate, pray, or just turn your cell phone off for 20 seconds a day. You get to choose!

Happy New YOU/Year!

Dr. M

I was coming home from California on Sunday, after a nice week off with my beautiful, expecting wife and son, Nico. While waiting for our flight I couldn’t help but notice the handful of people in line to get their free flu shot. First off, many of you have heard Dr. A and I speak before on the dangers of this well known toxic concoction, and for those of you who haven’t, well, you may want to come to our Nov. 10th discussion at our office on this topic. I just don’t have the time or space on this sheet to get into all the detail here, but I will point out a few major issues our country is having with fear based defense strategies.

As silly as it is to hear at O’Hare, “security level Orange,” it is even more silly to assume that everyone is born defenseless against the flu. You see, nobody can actually influence the true strength of your immunity except you. Only you can decide what nutrients you will put in your body on a regular basis for your body to break down an use as energy for the next battle that comes your way. Only you can decide to move your body to charge your metabolism or to sit in a lazy boy and veg out 4 hours a day into total catharsis. Only you can decide to have natural, regular chiropractic care for your family to have an improved nervous system function, or to rely soley on symptom suppressants such a Tylenol, Zyrtec, Aderol, inhalers for asthma, NyQill, Well-butrin, Prozac, and think you are healthy because you feel fine. So you see, there are different types of immune systems. Those that are practiced and ready for battle, and those that are kind of ready, and those that absolutely are waiting to be pummeled by the next opponent.

We live in a culture with a lot of immune systems that suck, and so because it takes work to fix it, we rely on faulty chemistry, like the flu shot to get our quick, cheap fix (kind of like a McDonald’s drive through), and sadly believe this will be the answer to keep us feeling fine while we continue to live a mediocre or terrible lifestyle. Even the CDC’s own statistics tell the truth about the ineffectiveness of the flu shot, yet they continue to recommend it, with little to no long term study on the known side effects of the neurotoxins contained within the vaccine. Countries like Australia pulled the H1N1 last year because of the significant number of seizures it caused in children. Um, yes, that was documented in the U.S. too, but I guess it was at “OK” levels here to keep recommending it to pregnant moms, kids, and our elderly first. By the way, why is it ok to get a flu shot, but you can’t eat sushi if you are pregnant, when there is 10 times more neurotoxins, like Mercury, in the flu shot as compared to sushi?

It all comes down to fear. People are actually afraid of something they shouldn’t be. Our bodies have been fighting the flu for centuries with great success naturally, but we have been sold a bad, fear based bill of health that basically teach us and sadly our kids, that we are born flawed, and we need special chemicals put in ALL of us, or we will get really sick and maybe DIE. My mission is not to battle this fear but to promote truth and empowerment. For anyone that knows me, my family and I will not get this shot, so do any of you feel scared or sorry for my family because of my ignorance? Of course you don’t, because you know, as well as I do, that our own, natural immunity, and what we choose to do naturally on a regular basis to boost it, holds a lot more weight than any concoction they can inject into your bloodstream. At the end of the “Flu season,” come and have a conversation with me if you don’t understand or agree with this, or better yet, register for our Nov. 10th class on the science behind the myth of the flu shot with Dr. A and I. If you do agree, register your neighbor and come with them. The only way we can share this sense of true freedom is to open our mouths. People are sick and tired of being sick and tired. Lets help our community together!

Much Respect….,

Dr. M

It’s that time of year again – Flu shot season. Unlike last year, big pharma and the media are not shouting from the rooftops that a pandemic is occurring… they don’t have to. Last year’s scare served it’s purpose, it softened the rules and increased the delivery system for flu vaccines. Now you don’t have to visit a doctor (who should be trained to determine whether or not a flu shot is appropriate for you) to get your flu shot, it is everywhere. You can’t walk down the street without seeing marquees saying “Flu shots are here!”, you can’t walk into Walgreens or Dominicks without being herded into the pharmacy to get your stick. You can even buy Flu shot gift cards!!!

What you don’t hear from big pharma or the media is that while these are great marketing strategies that make a ton of money for those involved – they don’t actually stop you from getting sick or getting the flu. And this isn’t me talking, and this isn’t new, breaking research, we’ve known this for a while. Take a look at some different groups and try to see who it helps:

Not babies: In a review of more than 51 studies involving more than 294,000 children it was found there was “no evidence that injecting children 6-24 months of age with a flu shotwas any more effective than placebo. In children over 2 yrs, it was only effective 33% of the time in preventing the flu. Reference: ”Vaccines for preventing influenza in healthy children.” The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. 2 (2008).

Not children: A study 800 children with asthma, where one half were vaccinated and the other half did not receive the influenza vaccine. The two groups were compared with respect to clinic visits, emergency department (ED) visits, and hospitalizations for asthma. CONCLUSION: This study failed to provide evidence that the influenza vaccine prevents pediatric asthma exacerbations. Reference: “Effectiveness of influenza vaccine for the prevention of asthma exacerbations.” Christly, C. et al. Arch Dis Child. 2004 Aug;89(8):734-5.

Not children again: “The inactivated flu vaccine, Flumist, does not prevent influenza-related hospitalizations in children, especially the ones with asthma…In fact, children who get the flu vaccine are more at risk for hospitalization than children who do not get the vaccine.“ Reference: The American Thoracic Society’s 105th International Conference, May 15-20, 2009, San Diego.

Not adults: In a review of 48 reports including more than 66,000 adults, “Vaccination of healthy adults only reduced risk of influenza by 6% and reduced the number of missed work days by less than one day (0.16) days. It did not change the number of people needing to go to hospital or take time off work.“ Reference: ”Vaccines for preventing influenza in healthy adults.” The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. 1 (2006).

Not the Elderly: In a review of 64 studies in 98 flu seasons, For elderly living in nursing homes, flu shots were non-significant for preventing the flu. For elderly living in the community, vaccines were not (significantly) effective against influenza, ILI or pneumonia. Reference: ”Vaccines for preventing influenza in the elderly.” The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews.3 (2006).

The crazy thing is that there are safer, more effective ways to prevent the flu. For example, a recent study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that Vitamin D supplements are more effective than vaccines for preventing the flu in children. Yet we continue to push unproven, possibly unsafe vaccines for kids!

Don’t be a wimp. You’re body has the tools and ability to fight the flu – you just have to train it to be strong. Vitamin D is one way, there are others. We are the personal trainer for your immune system. Talk to us today about what you can do to make you and your family strong!

Now that it is winter in Australia, they are beginning to go through the FEAR mentality of the FLU like we did last year.
Remember how they told us we were all going to get really sick and die with the so called H1N1 outbreak? What a joke….it wasn’t any different than any other year, and “the outbreak” because people got vaccinated.

We have such a surplus of the H1N1 vaccine, that government ads are popping up on bus billboards and bus stops, and on tv commercials, in order to get rid of it. Myself or my family didn’t get that untested, unproven vaccine, and now after new news coming out of Australia, I’m really glad we didn’t! Australia is calling for a ban on the flu vaccine as it has caused many convulsions in children under five. What’s really scary is that children and pregnant women are who they market it towards the most! It makes me sick! At least Australia is willing to admit when danger exists, and is working to take steps to see if there is a better way. We had the same vaccine here in the US. Does any think that they same things weren’t happening to our children? My wife, Monica, works in the ER at Mt. Sinai here in Chicago, and I KNOW she saw convulsions in children who took the vaccine hours before! Yet, our own government is conducting a huge market campaign to get rid of the unused vaccine (for which we, the American people, paid pharmaceutical companies millions of dollars for) before it expires. Why are we in a situation where the US government is acting like a drug dealer on the street corner?

Educate before you vaccinate….there is a better way!

Our annual vaccine seminar is coming in August, so keep a look out. Lots of people want to know more about the truth, and it’s my absolute pleasure to reduce fear by teaching TRUTH!

Be Well,

Dr. Heath McKinley

Anyone who has sat through goes to the grocery or watches TV has no doubt been exposed to the alphabet soup of vitamins – A, B, E, D, K, not to mention the myriad of minerals, herbs, etc that are pushed on us by doctors, health guru, and the food industry.

What should you be taking?

The answer, of course, is that everyone is different; depending on your lifestyle, your food intake, your environment you may need different levels and types of help – because that’s what supplements are, additional help to add to your healthy diet, not a substitute for a healthy diet.

If you’re like me you love living in Chicago. We get to experience world class culture and art, the lakefront, all in all a vibrant environment to live in. One consequence of our decision to live in Chicago are the long, grey winters. This is especially important in the realm of health and Vitamin D.

Vitamin D may be one of the most overlooked vitamins, many people come into our office taking some sort of supplement – we see lots of Vitamin B and C’s for example. We don’t see a lot of Vitamin D.

Most people know of Vitamin D from the milk we all drank in grade school – fortifide with Vitamin D. Vitamin D is, as the Vitamin D Council explains

“Technically not a “vitamin,” vitamin D is in a class by itself. Its metabolic product, <dfn style="padding: 0px; margin: 0px;" title="see glossary">calcitriol</dfn>, is actually a <dfn style="padding: 0px; margin: 0px;" title="see glossary">secosteroid hormone</dfn> that targets over 2000 genes (about 10% of the human <dfn style="padding: 0px; margin: 0px;" title="see glossary">genome</dfn>) in the human body. Current research has implicated vitamin D deficiency as a major factor in the pathology of at least 17 varieties of cancer as well as heart disease, stroke, hypertension, autoimmune diseases, diabetes, depression, chronic pain, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, muscle weakness, muscle wasting, birth defects, periodontal disease, and more.”

Why Vitamin D is a major concern to us living in Chicago is that your body makes Vitamin D when exposed to direct sunlight. This is great for us in the summer, but unfortunately it leads to deficiency when we begin our winter “hibernation” from the cold.

The answer to this is supplementation. According to the Vitamin D Council we should maintain a blood level of 50–80 ng/mL. In order to achieve this they recommend supplementing 5000 IU of Vitamin D3 each day for 2-3 months then testing your blood levels. (Please note: Vitamin D toxicity can occur if you take too much, as always you should consult with your health care professional on appropriate dosage and supplementation for your individual needs).

One of our collegues, Dr. Meyer Eisenstein of Homefirst Health in Rolling Meadows, is on the forefront of Vitamin D supplementation. Here’s a video from a presentation he gave on Vitamin D.

The number 1 health issue of the past year is obviously the so-called swine flu pandemic. Vitamin D plays a huge role in the function of your nervous system and your ability to fight off the flu. I’ll let Dr. John Cannell of the Vitamin D Council explain.

Supplements are not a substitute for a good diet. But in cases such as the winter in Chicago, they are necessary for body to function properly. If you have any questions whether or not Vitamin D is right for you please click here to send us a message, or talk to us at your next visit.

If you’re like me your probably sick of hearing about the swine flu. Dr. McKinley wrote a great piece about it last week. In it he mentioned that one of the events that put Chiropractic on the map was the Flu epidemic of 1917-1918. You see before the 1970s the public consciousness didn’t immediately associate Chiropractic with back pain, people visited Chiropractors for any number of reasons. You may have recently heard the term “Wellness Revolution”. It’s used to describe the new focus (of mainly allopathic medicine) on holistic and natural methods of healing. Well, guess what, there is nothing revolutionary about wellness, the Chiropractic profession has been practicing it for hundreds of years. This is why those people in 1917-18 brought their loved ones to the Chiropractor when they were suffering from the flu. It wasn’t because their back hurt, it was because at that time Chiropractic hadn’t been label as “back doctors”, and they understood that a chiropractic adjustment allows the body’s immune system to function better, allowing them to fight off the flu virus. This is the reason that so many less chiropractic patients died during the epidemic than the general population as a whole.

This brings me back to the swine flu. I’m linking a great article written outlining the scientific evidence for chiropractic helping those with the flu. You’ll see close to a hundred articles referenced for this claim.

In the end it all comes down to this: you can’t avoid the flu bug, if one person in your school, your place of work, your home has it, you will be exposed. Your level of health and immunity will determine whether you or your loved ones will suffer from it. If you eat healthy, exercise, manage stress in your life, live purposefully, are under chiropractic care, etc, you shouldn’t have to worry. If you’re not doing these things it doesn’t mean that you will get swine flu. But eventually your lifestyle will catch up with you: maybe swine, bird, dog, cat, bear, iguana, or any other flu. Why not do something about it now?

Enjoy!!!

Flu Prevention Plan Should Include Chiropractic Care

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Dr. Matthew McCoy

People of all ages are encouraged to add chiropractic to their strategy for warding off and fighting the flu and its effects – swine flu or otherwise.

Spinal adjustments can have a positive effect on immune function according to a growing number of researchers who are exploring the common denominators in disease processes, and the role of the nervous, immune, and hormonal systems in development of immune related illnesses.

Chiropractic corrects spinal abnormalities called vertebral subluxations that result in interference of the nervous system. Since the nervous system controls all functions of the body — including the immune system — chiropractic care can have a positive effect on immune function.

“Contemporary research is beginning to shed light on the neurobiological mechanisms which may explain the outstanding clinical results chiropractors have experienced when managing patients with viral and infectious diseases,” stated Dr. Christopher Kent, Co- Founder of Chiropractic Leadership Alliance.

Dr. Kent explained: “A comprehensive review of the research literature reveals the current understanding that the brain and immune system are the two major adaptive systems in the body. During an immune response, the brain and the immune system ‘talk to each other’ and this process is essential for maintaining homeostasis or balance in the body.”

Since its inception, chiropractic has asserted that viruses and microbes don’t threaten us all equally and that a healthy immune system easily repels most invaders. The immune system protects us from the flu, as well as any other infectious disease, and strives to get us well again when we do fall ill. Our immune system, like every other system in the body, is coordinated and controlled by the nervous system.

Chiropractors are also aware of the importance of positive health life style practices (rest, drinking ample quantities of water, diet, exercise, proper diet, use of multivitamins and minerals, and stress reduction approaches) that can also positively influence the nervous system and immune response. According to a large study of the chiropractic profession recently conducted by the Institute for Social Research, Ohio Northern University (McDonald et al., 2003), chiropractors also customarily advise their patients as to the benefits of these other modalities in optimizing overall health.

Chiropractors helping patients battle the flu is not a new occurrence either. During the 1917-18 influenza epidemic, which brought death and fear to many Americans, it has been estimated that 20 million people died throughout the world, including about 500,000 Americans. It was chiropractic’s success in caring for flu victims that led to the profession’s licensure in many states.

Researchers reported that in Davenport, Iowa, out of the 93,590 patients treated by medical doctors, there were 6,116 deaths — a loss of one patient out of every 15. Chiropractors at the Palmer School of Chiropractic adjusted 1,635 cases, with only one death. Outside Davenport, chiropractors in Iowa cared for 4,735 cases with only six deaths — one out of 866. During the same epidemic, in Oklahoma, out of 3,490 flu patients under chiropractic care, there were only seven deaths. Furthermore, chiropractors were called in 233 cases given up as lost after medical treatment, and reportedly saved all but 25. In another report covering 4,193 cases by 213 chiropractors 4,104 showed complete recovery.

“These results are not so surprising given what we now know about the interaction between the nervous system and the immune system” stated Matthew McCoy DC, MPH, Editor of the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health – Chiropractic. “Through research we know that chiropractic has beneficial effects on immunoglobulins, B-lymphocytes (white blood cells), pulmonary function and other immune system processes.”

One such study, conducted by Patricia Brennan Ph.D and her team, found that when a chiropractic “manipulation” was applied to the middle back, the response of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (white blood cells) taken from blood collected 15 minutes after the manipulation was significantly higher than blood collected 15 minutes before and 30 and 45 minutes after the chiropractic procedure. This research demonstrated an “enhanced respiratory burst” following the chiropractic adjustment. This “burst” is needed for our immune cells to destroy invading viruses and bacteria.

Another small study of HIV positive patients was conducted to study the effects of specific chiropractic adjustments to correct vertebral subluxations in the upper neck on the immune systems of HIV positive individuals. Over the six-month period of the study, the group that did not receive chiropractic care experienced a 7.96% decrease in CD4 cell counts, while the adjusted group experienced a 48% increase in CD4 cell counts over the same period.

A large retrospective study conducted by Robert Blanks Ph.D and colleagues studied 2,818 individuals undergoing chiropractic care – these individuals reported an average overall improvement, ranging from 7-28%, in a battery of physical symptoms including stiffness/lack of flexibility in the spine, physical pain, fatigue, incidence of colds and flu, headaches, menstrual discomfort, gastrointestinal disorders, allergies, dizziness and falls (Blanks et al., 1997, Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research).
More importantly, the incidence of colds and flu was reduced by an average of 15% in this large population who were undergoing regular chiropractic care.

“In addition to the passive recommendations regarding hand washing, avoiding large gatherings, coughing and sneezing into your hands – it makes a great deal of sense to do everything you can to ensure that your immune system is functioning at its best. And that strategy should include chiropractic care” stated Dr. McCoy.
